It was a tale of two cities for the Aceways Autogear Racing team when Todd Wanless and Robbie Farr took on the world's best sprintcar racers in the Bevelite Glass $50 000 to win race in Sydney on January 5/6 while Pete Thorley and American Brent Kaeding remained in Brisbane to fly the team colours in the inaugural Sprintcar Piston Cup at Titan Garages Brisbane International Speedway. With close to seventy cars entered for the Bevelite Glass race and only twenty-four spots available in the A-Main event on night two, competition for those spots was always going to be tough. Driving the ex-Kasey Kahne JEI/Mopar entry and despite failing to qualify for the Preliminary Feature on the opening night of the qualifying races, Todd worked his way into the main event field on night two, eventually finishing twenty-second behind race winner and current World Of Outlaws Champion Donny Schatz. Robbie however had a less than memorable weekend in the #7 Cool, finishing eighth in the B-Main on night two and missing out on qualifying for the big race. In Brisbane, Pete Thorley's night came to an early and unexpected end during the hot laps sessions when an unknown piece of debris entered the car's cockpit through the side panel and hit his leg. Pete spun to a stop and exited the car in obvious pain and was attended to by the racetrack's medical personnel before leaving on his accord for hospital for further examination. Pete took no futher part in the night's racing and returned to the track after being given the all clear, much to the relief of the team. American Brent Kaeding, who has joined the Aceways Autogear team for the International and World Series Sprintcars events in Brisbane during January, set the fastest time of the hot laps sessions with an 11.721 second lap of the 1/4 mile raceway. Brent went on to win the six lap Dash and led most of the night's Feature event before an incident when racing with compatriot Jonathan Allard in heavy lapped traffic left his #69 Maxim with a flat tyre, ending Brent's run and a probable win in the Sprintcar Piston Cup. The Aceways Autogear Racing team re-unite this Wednesday, Friday and Saturday for three nights of World Series Sprintcars action at Brisbane International Speedway, culminating in the $20 000 to win, fifty lap Titan Garages World Series Australian Sprintcar Open, the richest race in the twenty year history of the Series. |
